The day Martin Amis died.
Friday, May 19, 2023.
Today, I managed to avoid any farcical mishaps or disasters. It was a beautiful, sunny spring day in May. I had to return some comic books — Dimitri’s *Le Goulag*, featuring his anti-hero Eugène Krampon from Nogent-sur-Marne — to the library. I went by bike, well aware that cycling in Paris is always dangerous. Cars overtaking you might still be careful, but when they turn... and after struggling up the incline of Rue de la Convention and Rue de Vouillé, the temptation to get carried away on the downhill stretch of Rue d’Alésia and Rue de Tolbiac has to be tempered : at the traffic lights, the cops are lounging about, yet keeping a watchful eye. I found myself thinking that when you don’t like a city, or the people in it, there’s nothing to be done about it. But where would I rather be ? I learned from the news that devastating floods had hit Emilia-Romagna in Italy, with the Savio River bursting its banks; tourism has its limits. One ought to be among the volunteers helping the local population, but the Civil Protection and the fire department are already on the job. So, all that’s left is to accept one’s lot — and the puny, clumsy efforts I make. It was a lovely ride, nonetheless, and the walk back held its own charm, taking me along the Blanqui, Saint-Jacques, Raspail, and Edgar Quinet boulevards and past the Cartier Foundation. Yet whenever I cross paths with a volunteer, I feel compelled to steer clear; I know full well that any casual conversation starting with " How are you ? " will inevitably end with a request for money.
At the library, I even discovered children’s books from the ‘Bibliothèque Verte’ series that I used to read as a child — Lieutenant X’s Langelot and Paul-Jacques Bonzon’s Les Six Compagnons. Even back in my days — the late 1970s and early 1980s — these were already old-fashioned; they were series that dated back to the 1960s. It reminds me of the Noisy-le-Grand library, which has, of course, since disappeared. It was located between Impasse des Vergers (now Rue des Vergers), where my childminder lived, and the Clos Saint-Vincent C.E.S. (a type of secondary school — though the distinction from the C.E.G. had officially vanished in 1975), which lay to the east of Impasse des Vergers (it was rebuilt in 2002 on a new site further west, north of Rue des Vergers; address : 3 Mail du Clos Saint-Vincent). Naturally, this means I can’t find anything there anymore. Over the last thirty years, Noisy has been built up like an American-style suburb, with neighborhoods and residential blocks springing up out of nowhere. But I remember that library; you reached it via a small footpath running between my childminder’s house and her parents’ home on Rue de la République. Unless I’m making a mistake : the property at 4 Impasse des Vergers is now roughly where 24 Rue des Vergers stands, meaning the Saint-Vincent school wasn’t rebuilt very far from its original location, and what used to be a path through the greenery has become the Mail du Clos Saint-Vincent. I seem to recall the library being right there; today, it’s part of the Espace Michel Simon complex as the Georges Wolinski media library. It wasn’t very far away. In short, the difference between yesterday and today is a total nightmare — especially the architectural aspect, which, despite appearing innocuous, is cold and soulless.
It was in this library, then, that I used to read the adventures of the Six Compagnons — amateur detectives known as the « Gros-Caillou » gang, named after their meeting spot in Lyon’s Croix-Rousse district — and of Langelot, an orphan who became a secret agent at eighteen.
That is what rediscovering these ‘Bibliothèque Verte’ volumes brings to my mind. It’s all very light reading — though even these children’s books are actual novels of over 150 pages, part of series spanning 40 to 50 volumes (roughly one per year since their inception).
Two slip-ups, though : I had an appointment with a writing workshop employee — I thought it was a video call at 2:30 PM, but it turned out to be a phone call at 2:00 PM. How do I manage to get things wrong all the time ? And I feel compelled to say I’m satisfied with the School’s classes — since my writing style is clunky and imprecise, and the corrections help lighten it up — even though, in reality, I don’t see how I could change my style, for I don’t like these women, and above all, the advice they give me. I asked how one might go about describing a journey; in response, she spoke to me about Dominique Fernandez. I replied that I knew his work (the books on St. Petersburg and Naples for example) and that he was one of these who gave me the envy to visit Russia. Yet he is one of those writers I don’t like very much, because he is an activist for the gay rights cause – poor reason : he’s not the more vehement, and his convictions do not interfere and do not prevent to enjoy the reading.
Later, I had to fix the toilet leak : I forced the nut on the water inlet valve when all I really needed to do was tighten the screws holding the tank to the enamel base. Luckily, my father really helped me out with that one — just as he has with so many other things in the past. It saved me from paying an exorbitant plumber’s bill.
The walk was pleasant enough on such a beautiful May day. Admittedly, it’s not the feverish May of 1968, though there is still the protest against pension reform ("It’s Darmanin who ought to be dissolved in a bathtub of acid... though he’s not the only one"), the Lutte Ouvrière rally in Val-d’Oise, the European cup matches...
As for me, the revolution I prefer is the Copernican one. A revolution that makes no noise — very much like me — and yet, it turns. People don’t realize it, but without making a fuss, the Earth keeps on turning. It orbits the sun and spins on its own axis, all within a continuously expanding universe. But what lies on the other side ? If we speak of a galaxy, it implies there is something outside that galaxy — on the other side of a membrane, a boundary, a frontier… But for the universe ? I still have, as I always have had, difficulties to represent myself what means a universe in expansion. Great writers and scientists dislike the daydreamers who retreat into hazy metaphysics, yet they don’t explain everything either. Beyond our galaxy, there are other galaxies. And beyons the universe ? But how do we tell the difference ?
And for that matter, how is it that an atom resembles a miniature solar system, with electrons orbiting the nucleus just as planets orbit the sun ? How did the universe we know originate from an explosion of energy — transforming into matter — that was once contained within a thimble (a fact that always reminds me of the Shakespeare quote from Hamlet : « I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a king of infinite space »)? According to the Big Bang theory, this happened 20 billion years ago. The temperature was billions upon billions of degrees; a tiny fraction of a second after the Big Bang, the universe cooled and expanded, and elementary particles — quarks — began to form matter. The temperature plummeted by billions of degrees every billionth of a second. One millionth of a second after the Big Bang, the first "building blocks" of matter appeared; shortly thereafter, two protons and two neutrons combined to form the first atomic nucleus — a helium nucleus — while the temperature dropped to 3 million degrees. One minute after the Big Bang, a dizzying drop in density allowed electrons to orbit freely around atomic nuclei. The first hydrogen atoms formed, followed by helium atoms. These atoms would remain the most abundant in the universe : hydrogen and helium account for 99% of its matter. After these first five minutes, the universe expanded and cooled more slowly, marking the era of matter. Over the course of a million years, the temperature fell to 3,000 degrees. These conditions paved the way for the birth of stars.
The first atoms : forming atoms requires the union of nuclei and electrons. If a nucleus with a single proton combines with an electron, the simplest atom — hydrogen — is created. If a nucleus combines with an electron, a heavy hydrogen atom is formed. If an electron joins a nucleus consisting of two neutrons and one proton, it forms a tritium atom. A helium atom is created when two electrons combine with a nucleus made of two neutrons and two protons. The most complex atom to emerge during the era of matter is lithium, in which three electrons are associated with three protons and two neutrons.
500,000 years after the Big Bang, hydrogen and helium clump together into giant masses.
Another 500,000 years pass : stars condense within the cores of these masses and gather into clusters.
Three billion years later, these star clusters merge to form proto-galaxies which, under the influence of gravity, will evolve into the galaxies we know today.
Come faccio a sbagliarmi sempre ?
Una rivoluzione silenziosa, come me, eppure in atto.
